Re: Special forces utility shirt
The Army Never used the word "Utilities," That was the maroon korps. That is a Fatigue Shirt!
"This guy was awarded his combat award in 1968"
What do you base that assumption on??? What "combat award?" The combat patch on the right sleve or the CIB??? I see Nothing that suggests any date of award. This fatigue shirt, by the way, was made about 1972 or 73.
I also see something missing that should be on this "if" it is a legit fatigue shirt!
Appearently no one has noticed the mistake.

Re: Special forces utility shirt
There is a James P. Murtagh listed in Stephen Sherman's "CIB/CMB AND VN JUMP WING AWARDS TO SPECIAL FORCES
IN VIETNAM" who received the CIB as a 1st Lt. on 2/26/68 while serving with Detachment C-4.
Now I'm calling it a utility shirt as that's what's wrote on the tag, which is quiet simple really.
Now this shirt hasn't been faked in anyway , it was bought in England from someone who has no idea about army gear. Someone who was selling shoes, handbags and child's toys. So I'm 100% that the seller even knew what special forces is never mind when Vietnam war was fought.

Looks like he spent 18 months attached to SF 06/01/67 to 11/06/68

Re: Special forces utility shirt
The missing item is VietNamese Jump Wings. This was an automatic award for SF after a short time in country. I've never known anyone who didn't find a source - several were available - to buy them and have them sewn on his "Fatigues" when he got back to the states - IF he didn't bring several back with him.
As to the name of the item - While the tag says utility that term was not used by the Army. The "Order of the Day" which stated the uniform to be worn that day always said "Class D, Fatigues" or something similar to that. I'd have to go find some of the stuff I saved to give the exact wording.
I have No idea why this difference in terminology, but it was there.

Re: Special forces utility shirt
I see nothing wrong with this shirt. Of the several I have/had, only a couple had the RVN jump wings. Most did not. Matter of fact, the last one I got with those wings was a MACV patched shirt. Although we may have called them fatiues, the proper QM term is utilities, cotton sateen. I believe this is stated in Stanton's book on uniforms. This is the 3rd pattern with V pocket and button cuff. Dated 72.

Similar... but quite different.
--Your shirt doesn't look that odd to me. The only reason for question I can see is that the DLA# says '72. So, in point of fact, the shirt was produced in 1972 (donut buttons are a giveaway, too). So-- it appears quite legit. If you want to see one that doesn't:
[img][/img]
This is an older, "Type-1" OG-107 Fatigue Shirt (so old, the tag is illegible). The buttons are of the older, brown plastic.
Now, the insignia on this would make it seem like a pretty cool find, no? But look at the sleeve:
[img][/img]
The old Ranger badge is supercool, but under the SF flash, it looks to be a triangular-- and *that* most likely resolves to an Armored Unit. And the collar insignia?
[img][/img]
Signals, right?
Not unusual for SF & Signals to be connected, but Armored, as well? I know that there was some strange stuff back in the early '60's (my uncle was ASA), but... this one looks "put together" to me. And badly. And it kinda' wrecks anything that was cool about it to begin with. Then again... it cost me a whopping $2.50, so it ain't all bad. =]
Cheers!

Re: Special forces utility shirt
Cool ,
its normal to see all different types of patches being used in the time frame ...even used ones cut form other uniforms .
