I have a possible chance to pick up a relatively complete British 58 pattern web gear, but it is missing ammo pouches, has i think 2 water bottle pouches and 2 general purpose pouches, and a yoke of some sort its all canvas, the shop wants $17 for it....there are several like it as well...my question is, what does a complete 58 pattern web gear look like minus the hated rucksack? (they'd be using a bergen instead?)

Re: British 1958 Patt web gear info
I have a few spare sets in various conditions, though for some reason I didn't get any water bottle pouches. From memory, the set consists of:
1. Belt
2. Left Mag Pouch and Right Mag Pouch (there are two different styles of one of them, I forget which)
3. H-Straps
4. Kidney Pouches (attaches to belt, rides around back)
5. Water Bottle Pouch (I don't know if 1 or 2 were standard)
6. Ground Sheet Roll (attaches to Backpack)
7. Two small belts for the pack
8. Backpack
$17 for what you described doesn't sound like a bad deal if the bits are in decent condition.

Re: British 1958 Patt web gear info
left mag pouch had "loops" on the outta side which act as a Bayonet frog for the SLR Bayonet, Only one water bottle pouch was issued as standard, the Ponch roll was designed to be attached beneath the kidney pouches.
There were of course other little pouches etc mainly for officers such as Bino case and compass pouch and of course the holster for the Browning Hi Power.
$17US doesnt sound too bad if its in good nick? be aware that the bloody stuff shrinks when it first gets wet so those pouches can get a little tight

I'm pretty sure I have some right pouches without the little pocket, but otherwise the same. At one point I had about 5 sets and found that to be the only significant difference. However, some seam to fade to a gray color while others appeared to maintain a green color. Not sure if there is a reason for that.

Re: British 1958 Patt web gear info
My old 58 set had 3 waterbottle pouches sewn together as the kidney pouches where bloody awful just as bad as the large pack, still got my set somewhere (I'll try and dig it out rebuild it and take some photos if you like) and I had a roll pin belt attached to the 58 pattern one with pop rivets and tape wrapped round, then the whole lot had a touch of flat black spray paint fired over it to cam it a little, then an addition of black elastic for foliage job done, that little pocket on the side of the ammo pouch I use to use it for cam cream and my racing spoon..
