They are issued to every sailor who's assigned to a shore-based CONUS command, and overseas where the mission requires that coloration.

As time goes by, we'll be seeing more and more on the secondary market.

I have quite a few sets. if you're interested in some feel free to IM me. They are still very hard to get ahold of. You cant but them in the base exchanges and they are only issued to the expeditionary commands. Such as SEALS, SWCC, Seabees, etc. Seabees still attach their logo to one of the breast pockets like the older BDUs. Ive had some embroidered onto the pocket and others have been a large patch.

Now the combat sets like in the last photo with the American flag are very hard to come buy. Im pretty sure these are only made by Crye still and the Navy hasnt made a NWU3 combat set yet (or if they even will).

Crye has only done the AOR Patterns for the Navy, Not clear on a difference between the patterns though.. They're so similar, are they the same? AFAIK, NWU III Has the emblem and AOR 2 does not.

AOR is type of camo pattern while NWU is cut of uniform.

    NWU type I: Blue digital
NWU type II: Desert digital (AOR 1)
NWU type III: Woodland digital (AOR 2)

I believe that AOR 1 pattern on NWU do have Navy emblem, while other AOR 1 uniforms such as combat shirts, etc... Does not because it is also used by other SOF units such as SF, CAG, etc...

I'm sure if you find AOR 2 that is NOT NWU type III, it won't have any Navy emblem.

Until the NWU was adopted, all AOR1/2 garments were commercial.

That is why there are no emblems on them.

What's the latest on NWU I being replaced by NWU III for general personnel this coming year? A friend in the Naval Reserves was first told everything will be switched out, but now they seem to be hedging their bets due to pending budget cuts. Anybody heard anything more recent?

Navy NWU type 3 Empty nwu 1 ,2, and 3...

Post by ripcord Fri Jan 11, 2013 11:57 pm

There are 3 NWU type of uniforms. It is a bit confusing. NWU I is the digital blue dominant work uniform. NWU II is the Navy Desert Version, also called AOR1. NWU III is the Navy Woodland Version, also called AOR2 ( and the avocado by the sailors who wear it ).
Some manufactures do not include the ACE ( anchor, Constitution, Eagle )in the pattern. Patagonia and Crye Precision garments ( and others, I am sure ) do not use the ACE. I have items in both NWU II and NWU III ( AOR1& AOR2 ) that have the ACE. I also Have Items in both the patterns that do not. I have not seen any NWU I items without the ACE. There is no corresponding AOR designation for the NWU I..
There is a multitude of different cuts of uniforms. For example, Patagonia blouses ( tops ) have the upper pockets slanted outward ( like the
ERDL jungle combat coat/jacket )while the Crye Precision blouses have inward slanted pockets.Unicor, and API LLC ( and others )have straight
pockets. By the way, the first two have no ACE, while the second two have the ACE in the pattern.Of course the position of the pockets are not the only differences in the cut of the Uniforms.

Great photo of a group of SEALs,

The 5 operators in combat shirts are wearing Crye Precision Combat Trousers, and probably
Crye Precision Combat shirts as well. The Combat Shirts could also be New Balance made.
The other Seals ( except the guy wearing what look like ACUs (?)) are wearing garrison uniforms
that could be made by a host of different manufacturers.. API, Goodwill Ind. Unicor, etc.
Of course the garrison uniforms could also be worn on certain ops, but the Crye Precision trousers
as worn by the 5 operators pictured are the full blown combat version. Note the provision for removable
knee protectors on the (duh) trousers... Crye Precision also manufacture "garrison' garments called navy custom.
They are of a different cut as the "garrison" uniforms in the photo.

Will try to post some different cuts of NWU/AOR patterns soon...

    Go Navy !!!! ripcord
