Re: Strange WWII German Camo
I agree, these are not Germans uniforms. I think they are Bulgarian, though I can't explain the "diving eagle" chest badge. The Bulgarians are the only nation I know of to have German inspired airborne forces during WW2. If someone can identify the award on the left hand soldier that would likely help confirm it.
Another possibility is these are Germans but they are using Bulgarian (or other) smocks with standard LW chest badge.

Re: Strange WWII German Camo
Hi,
could the badge be this?
It is an "Bulgarian royal NCO officer badge sign. This is the Bulgarian royal NCO sign - nice enameled badge in fortm of Bravery cross. The sign here has serial number stamp on reverse. Badge is of the emission made in Bulgaria - there is also jeweler mark as seen on the picture." Source: www.shopbulgaria.com
Here is another photo I found on Lost Bulgaria:
It is Bulgarian paratroopers in Sofia 1945. In my opinion they are wearing German uniforms - and I suspect the photo that started this thread is also showing a soldier in a German uniform. Apparently the Bulgarian Paratroopers were trained by the Germans and later in 1944 when Bulgaria changed from the German side to the Allied side fought the Germans in Yugoslavia.
Interesting thread!
Best regards
Henrik

Re: Strange WWII German Camo
Nice finds Henrik! OK, I think we can safely say the mystery picture is of Bulgarian soldiers. The smocks being German makes the most sense, but the ones in the first pic sure look different. Still odd to see LW eagles on the breast.

Re: Strange WWII German Camo
To me the badge on the left FJ looks like a Spanish cross.

Re: Strange WWII German Camo
Maybe it is German Fallschirmjäger Splinter B camouflage?
The smock on the left in the picture.
