Re: BGS?? WW2 Type Helmet.
Note that this helmet portrayed here is not what the guy says it is:
Various types of WW2 style steel helmets were used by German police and BGS forces after the war. Sometimes they were actual wartime production (such as M40) with new liners and a fresh coat of paint. Other times they were new production, including an apparent run of M40 helmet shells made in the late 1940s. There were several modifications of the basic design, which I'm no expert on. Often the only distinguishing difference is the slight difference in paint color, though often Polizei forces had state crest decals on theirs. Their use was discontinued, I think, during the mid 1970s change to less militaristic and more standardized uniforms. They substituted a plastic, padded riot type helmet instead.
Gulf, I'm not sure if your helmet is BGS or some Polizei type. I think the paint color and rough surface are consistent with BGS type.
Steve
The helmet is marked for Berlin Polizei ("P.P.Berlin") which, although heavily militarized like the BGS, does not have anything to do with the BGS. The decals are not BGS but rather Bundeswehr, which again has nothing to do with BGS. I remember seeing some sort of discussion about these decals before, perhaps even this specific helmet, but I don't remember if there was ever any official use of them. The BW wore various types of US M1 style helmets from the very start through 1990s, not WW2 style steel helmets. So whatever the origins of the decals are, they were put onto this helmet by a collector or someone else looking to inflate the value or visual appeal of the helmet.http://combathelmets.blogspot.com/2013/05/west-german-bundesgrenzschutz-m35-53.html
