The rain cover will be handy to camo up what ever pack people want to use now. I was on the 2nd pack trial and I didnt vote for this pack(in fact 8 others didnt as well) I will say the manufacture and parts used are good, just the design and layout is a bit off.

    Yea i agree,

I know several guys from 2/1 who were in the trials as well. They all wanted the molle alice type pack.

The recruits have been issued them last week, and the basic equipment only just fits, no rats and water or radios etc.

Ive packed it with the bog standard gear(althoug a better sleeping bag) there's still some room but not much. When we did Trial 2 I was the only person who bought some rat packs along(x 3) and actually pointed out that the smock should go in as well. I think space is going to be the big issue with these.

The MOLLE Alice didnt get up north.

Store creatures are going to have a fit when Battalion boys start butchering these and adding pouches here and there using ugly sloppy unavailiable sew awl stitches or are the new gear off limits to the usual barrack room cutting and slashing and half pie patch up jobs (not meaning proper machine jobs, you know what I mean)

Bolty you mentioned the "bog standard gear" for packing. What is the "bog standard" packing list for Kiwi light Inf?Would there be much difference between say ye and the Brits or Aussies?? I am guessing ye would have few differences with us(Irish DF) aswell.
Nice pack BTW.One advantage of having a lets say "limited space" pack is that you prioritise what you bring as you cant fit the kitchen sink! Very Happy

I guess we could add a few molle utility pouches the outside if needed for canteens etc. to make more inner space, that is if you could get issued with extra ones without having to buy your own

Im not Infantry, so my pack contents will differ. But by standard here's what I mean,

Sleeping bag, bivy bag, T Mat and silk liner.
    Change of shirts/pants/socks/T shirt,
    Wet weathers,
    Gloves, beanie,
Lite weight shelter, pegs and poles,
Fleece liner, thermal top and bottom,
    Fry plan,
    Toilet Kit,
    E Tool,
    Pack liner.

Then you are forgetting 3 days rats as a normal, up to 8lt of water saying, that in timor we had to take 8lt of water a day and packed for 3 days so a jerry plus.
Radios, cutting instruments for jungle work.
Saying pack light doesnt work these day you need a pack the size of a large alice pack to fit all this extra gear, unless you are not taking the packs on operations.
And to those who think every thing is done with Vehicles is wrong many patrols including multiple days are still conducted in afghan.

Cribs are our Afghan rotations, same as Herrick 3-4 etc, Rata's were our Solomon Is and Gyro's our East Timor rotations.

Now that the pack has been in service a while and judging by the amount of complaints about it a thought struck me.Why did ye not consider the USMC FILBE pack?
It's coyote brown so matches the rest of your equipment. Its similar to the ALICE but has all the PALS modularity etc AND it is a beast for carrying kit.
    Too american??

For Cap Branch to go back now and admit this process was a failure and ditch it would be a bridge to far. We will be stuck with the T in some form for a while. I know the 2 infantry Bn are working on a infantry type pack, maybe the FILBE would be considered. Its a pity that when the process started way back when the FILBE wasn't in the public arena then, also we weren't working with the USMC as closely either. I guess its a case of bad timing and personalities.

Interesting we have been here before with the Onward pack which was NZ designed and built and again didn't work as envisioned and then lead to the ALICE. so if history is anything to go by we will repeat the lesson again.

I wonder though that now the DCA Brig Gen Kelly has agreed it not ideal has has issues will the headshed sit up and take notice.I guess it will come down to funding in the end and justifying buying a whole new pack so soon after purchasing the T.
Perhaps a solution would be to purchase a new pack solely for the Infantry and redistribute their old T's to non combat units and the RF?

Anything that can be worn with BA, that looks like the way we are going now, but we won't work out of FOBs or just carry out raids, we will still carry out normal light infantry ops as usual, just like when we go to Australia and get told to stop working when the temperature reaches a certain level, do we no and then people start to go down, buggered knees, back, and can't hear a thing said the old timer.
