Interesting topic, I have seen some strange weathering effects on garments, but this looks like a printing error on a massive scale, but surely it would not passed QA?

Combat & Survival did a piece a while ago on the 'Ghost Print' early desert pattern kit. When Gulf War started, we only had the 4 colour desert kit which we sold to the Iraqis..so the MOD removed two of the darker browns and Desert DPM was born. The Magazine had some items that when the print screens started which were rushed into production to cope with the demand from the MOD, a number of kit was produced with remnants of the other colours...could this be it?

Not sure Lee, to my my knowledge "sparse" was the result of the rush to supply Brit troops with a Desert camo!
