My small German collection

These were one of my first militaria items, got these when I was six years old from a German friend.

The beret badge is for Jäger (light infantry) and should be on a green beret. Red is the most common colored beret and is correct for 10 different badges. Green, for example, is only used for 3.

So the badge was not originally used in that beret?

Correct. Each badge type is assigned a specific color and it does not change for any reason. As far as I know there are no exceptions. Jäger requires a green beret.

Yes each insignia is specific to a beret designated by the waffenfarbe system. The insignia on the beret that you have is for Jägertruppen or Light Infantry. It should go with a green beret. The red berets are typically for support services like supply, communications and so forth I think the only combat type unit to use the red beret is Artillerie.
