Just looking at it now i think it may be a medal? I should add ive not seen it in the flesh, only this photo.

It's the medal part of a 1914-1915 "Mons" Star medal. A British WW1 decoration.

The medal should have the name, rank, unit and service number stamped into the back. Most British service records are available on Ancestry.com.

The Mons star is the name given to the 1914 star,the medal shown is the 1914-15 star.
