Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Will post some pics up later of my helmet.
I wish somebody somewhere owned one of the helmets with the press studs for a mask to have a look at the issue label to find out if it is a different/purpose made helmet to take the mask or merely a modified helmet,if the latter then I have a mask and some pop studs so wouldnt mind having a go at converting mine.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Got a cracking colour pic somewhere but cannot find the damn thing!!
Also,of the limited pics I have seen of these, they have all been with the Oxygen Mask and have never seen a pic of an RAF Instructor or Trainees wearing one, only pic I saw somwhere of one without the mask being worn was by a member of the Red Devils Parachute Display Team, painted white with from memory RED DEVILS in red.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
I have in my possession a very rare Hanging basket,Training Depot, MK4/ NSN 20202202020.
These items are so rare I have only ever seen the one example in my many years of collecting, the only known example is this one, which I have fully restored and now takes pride of place, outside my back door.
Some of you may be aware of the original planting arrangement's for these items, which would have OD Pansies, and Khaki Geraniums. Unfortunately I have been unable to source these hard to source items, as they are no longer available. So I hope you will forgive me for substituting them with Hostas which are Japanese in origin ,and obviously not an NSN stock item.
I do have a question for any collectors here, who may have some in depth knowledge on these rare items. So were they issued in Denison smock hues as well, or were they only ever issued in the 1950's Black Korean war paint scheme's, I would be very grateful for any input on this,as I am very keen on displaying this item in it's correct livery.

No probs, unfortunately cannot think of any other item of British kit that uses a similar buckle that you might be able to use as a replacement.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
just a quick update on my incomplete parachute instructor helmet thanks to the close up pics gulf provided i quickly knocked up this running repair to the missing chinstrap/buckle assembly its a bit crude and maybe not 100% acurate but not bad for a piece of black plastic of which i shaped to suit and a camcorder bag strap ,although i certainly wouldnt want to start jumping out of aircraft with it just yet james

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Excellent job James-looks good.
Regarding the missing name off the rear, the couple ive had the names have been printed using one of those Dymo type label guns.
Wish I knew what the MTF stood for!!

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Captioned as an RAF Instructor but given he is wearing WW2 type Windproof Smock+Trs would say more than likely SAS.

First thing that comes to mind for MTF would be Multinational Task Force or Mobile Task Force.Gulf91 wrote:Excellent job James-looks good.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
thanks for the vote of confidence gulf i must of done something close to the original im also loving these referance pictures ive never seen anything like them before ,the goggles look vintage as well as the smock very intriguing , as for the name im hoping to decipher the gum marks to reveal the full name and maybe make good with new dymo stickers the good thing is we seem to have generated a bit of interest in this much ignored and underated helmet i think the reason nobody buys them on auction websites is at a glance they could be confused with a vintage bike helmet and i suppose look unappealing cheers james

A few years ago a load must have been released from the MOD(had never seen any before)dirt cheap,I managed to pick up 4,1 for a friend and 1 for myself.Managed to do a very good trade(when they were interested)on the other 2 helmets with a dealer.
After that hadnt seen any for a while but the odd one is now popping up here and there.
Not that popular as they arent "combat" helmets as such.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Quite a rare/hard to come by item I believe-a British issue NVG helmet mount, have no idea of type/useage etc as no stamps or markings at all to it.
