Re: THE HELMET THREAD
was rummaging through the loft and found my box of gasmasks so for a compromise on lack of space i thought i would just have a couple of my favorites on display

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
James could well be a limewash type material, cool piece Mate. BTW what have you coated you're relics with,it looks very glossy. Hopefully not oil as this degrades the original paint eventually.
Hope all is well in the James home

Goose fat/step very good, LOL.
Your right very quiet in dodge, maybe the run up to xmas means ,collectors do not have too much cash to buy more lids and show them off here??
It seems like a life time ago I bought some new steel ( or kevlar), I might have to dig about in the loft and find something I've not shown before!
Take care matey

Good old Santa, he never let's us collectors down eh!
LOL - I would like to see my families faces if I hung a load old steel lids from the crimbo tree..it would go down like a lead balloon I deeply suspect.

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Nice one James, without the perspex I can clearly see the lids, I really like your idea of enclosing the lids behind glass as it where, another inspirational tip I may just borrow of you.
I really miss being able to display my lids on show,in fact recently I discovered that because I had stacked a load of M1's on top of each other temporarily, I realised when I moved them all, the bottom one had the cradle hanging out of the liner,as the weight on top had rippied the rivets out of the cradle..I almost cried Mate.Oh well it's only fabric and metal I guess, but it taught me a vital lesson, that being correct storage is key!!

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
British HAPLSS (HALO) helmet. Modified Gentex HGU 55. I've got 2. One a mint in the box large (this one) and another hardly used XL (also in the box). The xl is up for trade for a decent kevlar helmet of a type used by UK/US SF.
Have small earphones and not the large cup type. Leather lined throughout. Fittings for a boom mic' on each side (along with comms socket on both sides. Used with a modified 'P' type oxy mask.
Goggles or visor can be used with it.

South African M87 helmet with strangely a US Choc Chip cover that has been on the helmet for a long time by the look of things-any ideas why the Choc cover?

Re: THE HELMET THREAD
Cheers Gary, the cover baffles me as well but the wear and rust marks are consistent with the fittings etc so has been on there for quite a while.
Sourced the Nutria cover to replace it but kind of like the Desert cover on it to be honest.

No worries Rich, and I agree with you the cover looks to be matched with the lid..very strange, to be honest I'm not aware of any mission aspects of the SA Army, but it might well be that the SA forces took part in some missions requiring Desert camo covers, I dunno??
Cool piece nevertheless
