My Navy Jumper Collection

I've got several of these around the house and it's time to work on a thread Rip brought up a while back posting a couple of his.

1st up, WW2 era tailor made uniform. BestBuilt Uniform made by Subway Tailors, Brooklyn, NY, San Diego, CA. High grade wool, black satin lined. Rating is Storekeeper 1st Class. Has Ruptured Duck discharge patch on right breast, and ribbons for all 3 theatres, WW2 Victory, and Philippine Liberation. Battle stars for 2 in Europe, and 1 in Philippines. Un-named unfortunately.

American Civil War Union Navy Frock(jumper)

I picked this up a few years ago for almost nothing. All anyone knew was it was an old Navy jumper. I saw it and did a little research. This style is shown in several period pictures. Trim was all added by hand. Fancy stitching, silk pocket, decorative cut edge. Very good condition for it's age.

WW2 era private purchase dress uniform. Made by F.J. Palmer & sons Ltd. in Sydney, Australia for COX J.W. Ford. Uniform is satin lined, has white 'DECK' rating stripe and Dragon liberty cuffs. 3 place ribbon bar for Asiatic-Pacific Theater(3 stars)/WW2 Victory/Philippine Liberation(2 stars). 3 stripes on cuff signify his rate as Seaman 1st Class. Next rate up would be Coxswain. This changed in 1948 with the stripes moving to the sleeve and all jumpers having 3 stripes on the cuff.

I keep it in a clothing bag to keep anything from getting on it or to it. Best part was the guy I was with complaining about how you can't find cheap Civil War artifacts anywhere anymore. He saw me pull it off the rack, pay $5 and then I used his reference book(that I'd sold him) to show him what it was. :-D

The fact the Navy hasn't changed the uniform much has gotten me some great deals over the years. It also helped me to sell some uni's to reenactors slightly modified to be closer to the era they are doing. It was a long process figuring out how to date these by labels, rates, insignia and overall looks/placement. Fun task tho!

Jumper of a Machinist's Mate 1st Class on the USS Ponce(LPD-15). Late 90's. Jumper is tailor made. There are no labels. Liberty cuffs are the rainbow wave type and has black satin lining with CONMAR sipper pocket. A liberty cuff patch has been added to the back to make a pocket. Ribbons show Desert Storm service.

This one is actually an extra I'm getting ready to sell. I have 2 of these, so no need to keep both.

Korean War era standard issue jumper in NOS condition. Size 38R. Still covered in loose threads and cutter tags. Made by Naval Clothing Depot as opposed to WW2 version Naval Clothing Factory. Cutter tags are a pinkish orange. It was hard to get a good picture of the color.

WW2 Era Enlisted blue uniform to Frank Smith. Smith wore this while in training, then went to his A school and became what was known as a "Slick Sleeve Chief". These were tradesmen with no ilitary background but several years experience in a job in the civilian world. Many were in technical and mechanical trades. Many were SeaBees. Smith was an electrician and was a Chief Electrician's Mate at the end of WW2. He stayed in the Navy and got out in the 60's.
This jumper has a WW2 Ruptured Duck and WW2 Victory ribbon. White "Deck" rating stripe on right shoulder. 1 stripe on cuff denotes Seaman Recruit rate.

WW2 Enlisted Blue jumper to a Seaman 2nd Class. Un-named. Has WW2 Ruptured Duck and American Campaign and Asiatic/Pacific Campaign ribbons. White "Deck" stripe on right shoulder. 2 stripes on cuff for Seaman 2nd Class rate.

WW2 Enlisted dress blue uniform of Sn2c J.O. Wright. Wright was a SeaBee.

Jumper has WW2 Ruptured Duck on right chest and white "Deck" stripe on right shoulder. Left has American Campaign and WW2 Victory ribbons. SeaBees patch on upper left shoulder. 2 stripes on cuff denote rank of Seaman 2nd Class.

WW2 Enlisted dress blue tailor made jumper from a Seaman 1st Class.

Made of black gaberdine wool. Satin lined. Has white "Deck" stripe on right shoulder. 3 stripes on cuff denote Seaman 1st Class rate. Lining is black satin with zip pocket. Green embroidered anchor on back and green X stitch on pocked on front.

WW2 Issue Enlisted dress blue uniform for a Sn1c.
Named, but it's very feint. Has white "Deck" stripe on right shoulder and 3 white stripes on cuff to denote Seaman 1st Class rate. Left breast has European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign ribbon.

Jumper has white "Deck" stripe on right shoulder. Ruptured Duck on right breast. Left breast has American Campaign, Asiatic/Pacific Campaign and WW2 Victory ribbon bars. Amphibious Forces patch on upper left sleeve. 3 stripes on cuff denote Sn1c rate.

WW2 Tailor made Enlisted dress blue uniform of a Fireman 1st Class.

Made of black gaberdine wool. Has red "Fireman" stripe on left shoulder. Right breast has theater made Ruptured Duck. Left breast has European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign ribbon. 3 stripes on cuff denote 1st Class rate. Black satin lining with gold stitching around front inside yoke. Stars on back collar flap are hand embroidered.

WW2 Seaman 1st Class dress blue jumper.

Has Aviation Radioman striker on left sleeve and Aerial Gunner badge on right sleeve.
No name unfortunately.

WW2 Yeoman 3rd Class M.A. Consla.

Has embroidered stripe Yeoman 3rd Class rate on left sleeve. Ruptured Duck on right breast and 2 place ribbon bar for American Campaign and Asiatic/Pacific Campaign with 1 star on left breast. Stars on rear collar bib are hand embroidered.

WW2 dress blue jumper of Coxswain E.A. Groshens.

Jumper has Coxswain rate on right sleeve made from Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class with 1 stripe removed. Left sleeve has Amphibious Forces patch. 2 place ribbon bar over left breast pocket for American Campaign and Asiatic/Pacific Campaign with 4 battle stars.

WW2 dress jumper of Coxswain Milan Skodacek. He was stationed with PGM-24 Motor Gunboat(Sub Chaser).

Jumper has right sleeve Cox. rate. 2 place ribbon bar for American Campaign/Asiatic-Pacific Campaign with 2 battle stars. Ruptured Duck on right breast.

WW2 blue dress jumper of Stewart 3rd Class Warren Mack. Mack was with Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 7 (MTB-7).

Uniform has Cook 3C. rate on left sleeve and 2 place ribbon bar for American Defense and American Campaign.

WW2 blue dress jumper of Aviation Radioman 3rd Class J.E. Woods.

Tailor made jumper with tailor made Aviation Radioman 3c rate on left sleeve. Ruptured Duck on right breast. 4 place ribbons on left breast for Navy Unit Commendation, Air Medal, Asiatic-Pacific with 2 battle stars, and WW2 Victory. Aviation Aircrew wings over ribbons. Embroidered name on wool inside. Hand sewn stars on collar.

WW2 blue dress jumper of Aviation Ordnance man 3rd Class R.E. Bair.

Has Aviation Ordnanceman 3c rate on left sleeve. Name on tag in neck.

WW2 tailor made uniform to a Corpsman 3rd Class.

Long serving sailor. 8 place ribbon bar for Navy Presidential Unit Citation/ Navy Good Conduct/ Navy Expeditionary Medal/ China Service Medal/ American Defense Medal/ Asiatic-Pacific Campaign/ WW2 Victory Medal/ Navy Occupation Medal. Taylor made Corpsman 3c rate on left sleeve. Some fancy rainbow stitching inside pants and jumper. Un-named unfortunately.

WW2 tailor made dress blue jumper from Coast Guard Cook 2nd Class E.S. Martiuk.

Made by The "Gobs". Has hand stitched corners and stars. Tailor made Cook 2c rate and service stripe on left sleeve. USCG shield on lower right sleeve. Ruptured Duck on right breast. Tailor label and stitched name inside jumper.

WW2 tailor made blue dress jumper of a Radioman 2nd Class.

Has Radioman 2nd Class rate on left sleeve. No name.
