I purchased this cap in late 2019/early 2021 from a Belarusian former-SSR uniform collector and have been searching but can't find any usage evidence for it.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this, or maybe even another one?
He described it as a Transnistrian M1992 "Black Sea Cossacks" cap, in the style of the French M1964 pillbox cap, but in the early Moldovan TTsKO pattern.
It obviously has seen some hard use; it's soiled, shredded, sweat stained, and has rust spots all over it.
There's some photographs of various Cossack forces fighting for the Transnistrian side of the 1990-92 war who certainly seemed to have worn whatever they wanted,
including regular civilian clothes, former Soviet uniforms, newer Moldovan and other former SSR uniforms, and some seemingly custom-made ones, which would
help lend credence in its validity as a Cossack's custom made cap.
That said, despite certainly being made of original Moldovan TTsKO fabric and appearing to have the age of something made in the early 90's, I can't confidently say
that it is definitely original without at least photographic evidence or seeing another example in someone's collection.
In the meantime however, enjoy these item pics and photos of some of the various patterns and uniforms worn during that period.
Enjoy!
