FYI, the patch on the one sleeve with the VI is the particular Mongolian Iraq rotation he was in, each contingent had their own patch.

Re: MONGOLIAN DESERT CAMOUFLAGE
It's probably a misnomer to call this Desert Camouflage as this is the standard army pattern for Mongolian troops. There is no season variation and as you know it can get pretty green in Mongolia in the summer.

Re: MONGOLIAN DESERT CAMOUFLAGE
Yes, there are a couple of places. The easiest to find in the Narantuul (my spelling might be a bit off) Market, also called the Black Market. It is in the south eastern corner of the city, east of the Ihtoiruu/ outer ring road and Teeverchidiin Street. The entrance of off the street I mentioned last.
You can't miss it, heaps of cars there. Can't remember what day it's not open, something like a Tuesday???
It'll cost a couple of Tuugriks to get in (20 or 50 from memory).
Don't take anything you don't want to lose. Pickpockets are thick on the ground.
Do take a pocket calculator as they don't speak english and you'll need to haggle over prices.
When you enter, head in and to the right. You need to pass all the shoe sellers. There are a couple of rows of stalls selling miscellaneous, Russian, US, cheap chinese knock-offs, but you can occasionally score some interesting stuff. I managed to get a slovakian desert set, cambodian dpm, russian vsr, turkish compressed leaf (also used by mongolian special police)also Mongolian, but generally only the standard army pattern.
Also good spot for souvenirs etc.
There is a stall that sells korean stuff (old spot and geometric stuff, but thats on the other side, past the big shed.
Anyone who goes to UB should pay it a visit. It was one of my favourite places to visit when I had a spare afternoon. They sell everyuthing from gers to jeans and with some good prices.
good luck.
Cheers,
Ben.

I just want to know... who the heck "passes through" Mongolia?!? You "pass through" a state like Connecticut or Rhode Island, not a country like Mongolia

I'd guess they are using some other nation's helmets. The trick would be to find out which one!

I have seen the Soviet model with markings on the front to Mongolia. Probably use them at home.

The helmet
Looks like a british F6 or perhaps a PASGT with RBR webbing, we use such helmet in ONU missions.

Re: MONGOLIAN DESERT CAMOUFLAGE
It seems that several countries that do not issue kevlar type helmets at home, use them on missions with the un and nato.

kevlar helmets
YEah, that`s our case, including infantry and support weapons....
at home: Steyr AUG (it`s replacing FAL), M76 helmets....
at ONU: F6, AK 101 with their correspondent grenade launchers and RPG of various types.... same on bullet proof vests, USA made.... at home: corean !! APC: at home: M113, Brazilian made APC`s....former russians and a BIG etc... In Onu: Mowags... and Vodnik everywere !!! (Cheapest than HUMVEE )
the problem for small natos like us is the low Armed Forces budgets, can`t pay the good equipment for all man, so, those involved in conflicts zones, have better equipment; in country.... well, only God knows !!

If the Mongolian Border Guards are trained 1/2 as well as their horses, they might be the best Border Guards in the world
