shelter - French 50s shelter half? Empty French 50s shelter half?

    Post by 5224 Sun Mar 13, 2011 2:25 pm

Got this as an "extra" item in a trade.
The seller said it were an French shelter half from the 1950s, I have tried to find some more information but without result. It does look like the French lizard camo, but is it not to bright with the khaki?
    http://www.kamouflage.net/camouflage/00104.php

There's a faded stamp that seem to be in French, and also the buttons have text in French. Is this maybe from one of the former colony's in Africa? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, this might be obvious things but I'm really not at home in French camo.

    The shelter half:

Great! Do you know how come they put so much khaki in it? Specifically developed and used in the colony's or just a random thing?

In the 80s they were selling these like mad for next to nothing, $5 or $10. I ended up using mine as a shop cover for painting Wink

There are two types, several variants. The first has sewn on buttons and is, I think, a year older than the type with pressed buttons. The camouflage patterns loosely fall into "sparse" and "dense" varieties. The shapes are not all identical either.

The one pictured here is sewn button, dense pattern.

I just checked some pics I have handy (my actual shelter quarters are buried) and the pressed button type is from 1952, so I think the sewn on button type is from 1951 or perhaps earlier.

Whoa!! Gilles, is that French made? Obviously it is from captured cloth. I am surprised the French would use it due to the hatred of the SS.

The pattern of the first tent is a variant of the German WWII pattern of my Zeltbahn splinter 1

    Steve

I think these tents was build in Germany for French army just at the end of the war
After French army adopt the lizard pattern
About that say Steve, I think that 90% of French people had never hear of the name of waffen SS before the end of the war
And the occupation of the France is not the occupation of Poland or Russia
During the German occupation, the exactions against the Frensh civil are from French police and militia, under control of the gestapo

    Hi Gilles,

Yes, for sure Germany made many things in the 1940s and 1950s as part of war reparations. So this makes sense!

As for SS, I was thinking of Oradour-sur-Glane. I thought that was very well known within France. But yes, you are correct. Most of the horrors seen in France were not done by soldiers in camouflage clothing.
