Not specifically and SAS issue item but a lot of period 60s pics of the SAS in jungle operations around the world show this type of bergen to have been very popular.

I cannot make out the date exactly-either 1966 or 1968 but love it as while it appears to have been issued its in pretty mint condition and also love the added period padding to straps and rear metal frame.

The inside of the top flap has a small zippered pocket and inside the bergen is an open pouch type pocket that i believe was to carry a radio-same as the US Alice Packs.

No quick release anywhere at this time-remember this was an exact copy of the WW2 Commando Bergen so just plain good old fashioned brass buckles on all closures im afraid.

Re: British 1960s "SAS" Bergen.
Australian Bergens can still be found in unissued condition although usually without the frame - which really only makes it good for hanging from a vehicle. My question is whether anyone knows what the two webbing straps on the harness straps are for. It looks like one could attach a '37 pattern ammo pouch to it ... or it could just be a handgrip strap to facilitate shifting the pack when heavily loaded. Anyone know for sure ..???

1960's Bergen
Hi
Im interested in buying a 1960 type sas bergen. I spent 27years in the Army and 5 of those years in the Parachute Squadron RAC.
I now give paratrooper Talks for the charity Help 4 Heroes. I give the Talks in red beret and para smock I also use some aids like a parachute. I like to use equipment I actualy used. We jumped with 60s type bergen which had to weigh at least 60lbs. I am useing a false one at the moment and would like to get my hands on the type I parachuted with. Blue Skies John
