The fabric looks like it could be original French lizard camo. There are flapped pockets inside too. I wonder if it's supposed to be reversible. Any thoughts on its origin?

Yes, I agree with Gilles, the pattern is faded but resembles the "Caatinga" variety of Brazilian lizard, one of the earlier types from the 80s perhaps. Definitely not French or Portuguese.

Re: Unusual lizard camo pants
Hi Carl,
Quite unusual brazilian pants you have... funny i had a few shirts/jackets of same pattern, but never even seeing a pair of pants... Very nice.
The colors definitely resemble the early caatinga pattern, but there were way to many trials in the early 80's regarding the lizard pattern.
The pants cut is very unusual, the buttons are the early style used in late 60's and 70's, so im assuming your pants are from late 70's to early 80's.
Where did you find them?
here some pics of my earliest lizard types
cheers

Re: Unusual lizard camo pants
Danilo,
It's definitely a strange cut. I found it at a 2nd hand store.

That's a wicked 2nd hand store.. IIRC, you found the Portuguese red lizard uniform second hand as well.

Re: Unusual lizard camo pants
Koalorka,
It's a bit of an overpriced 'vintage' shop, but I find interesting things there once in a while. The Portuguese red lizard uniform must have been someone else. I usually find real gems hiding at 2nd hand stores.
