still bugs me what rucksack is this. its got chinese markings and says "1979" but nowhere close to the original chicom rucksack used by the vietcong where it has 2 external pockets.

The Chicom/Vietcong/NVA ones that you are referring to AFAIK had 3 external pockets. I have this one as well and can only put it down to a post war version (sort of like a mountain rucksack) that was used to complement rather than replace the 'Vietcong' version.
