That's a good question. I don't know... maybe Seabees?

Re: Navy DBBU question
According to what I have been able to find, when implemented it was authorised for wear by all branches...but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
I'm with Philip -- my bet goes to the Seabees if anyone.

Here is a pic of some SEALS in Desert Storm, 1 has an M-14 while the other has a laser designator. Both are in 6 Color Desert.

Re: Navy DBBU question
Correct me if i'm wrong but I believe the Marines were in Desert Storm and if thats the case then the Navy would were choc's because the USMC doesnt have medical or religous staff. That is done by the Navy. If no choc's were worn, was there another camo uniform at the time?

Not that I know of....very limited use of the 3-Color desert, but mainly everybody used the 6-color. Im sure some Navy personnel that were not out in the field, but still deployed in the gulf wore Woodland, because that was all they had. But im guessing the Seabees and Corpsmen etc.. used the 6-color desert just like everyone else.

Hmm, the 6 color desert was around for a while...so there is a good bet there are some navy issued ones around though I have never seen any.
SEALS arent a good judge of stuff issued as Organizational gear...NSW kind of does their own thing and do and get whatever it takes to get the job done.

Re: Navy DBBU question
I know naval personnel deployed for OIF wore 3 Color Desert even outside of the combat theater performing logistics work. I assume the same thing happened for GW1, so it's possible (probable?) that some personnel wore 6 Color Desert because 3 Color Desert was just starting to be issued.

you know that is a great point. I wonder if the Navy had access to the DCU at the time of desert storm.CollectinSteve wrote:I know naval personnel deployed for OIF wore 3 Color Desert even outside of the combat theater performing logistics work. Re: Navy DBBU question
As far as I know, the Navy did wear the 6-Color camo. Most definitely the Marines, SEALs, and Corpsman. Not so sure about the SEABEES because 6-Color was at a premium during part of DS 1. Many troops when first deployed wore Woodland BDU's.
As far as 3-Color being used during DS 1.....it was around, but I can't find pics of it being used on a wide scale. I have heard that some rear-echelon logisitical units may have had access and wore it, but have never seen it worn in combat. Hope this helps.

Are the coast guard's choc's more or less rare then their DCU's? I haven't seen that many DCU's.

Re: Navy DBBU question
Both are extremely rare in my experience. I will say this...in all my years collecting, I have seen more CG DCU's than the 6-Color camouflage.

Re: Navy DBBU question
In 1993 I created a magazine layout for a NSW article and requested photos/info from the Navy's Office of Public Affairs. They sent me scads of pics along with actual film neg of SEALs wearing the desert camo pattern seen in the pic posted above by Downboy. In fact that was one of the pics they sent me! I had another dozen or so photos from that same photo shoot including one of a SEAL wearing a Skull Skates hip sack (fanny pack) as part of his kit. Most of the pics they sent me have since appeared in various books like U.S. Navy SEALs America Toughest Commandos.

Re: Navy DBBU question
Kinda curious which magazine(Popular Mechanics?)your referring to.NSW had a media blitz after Desert Storm.Been into SEAL stuff since the early 90`s and most of the stock photos if not taken by the Navy PIO would most likely be coming from Fred J. Pushies or Hans Halberstadt. These guys have authored numerous military books since then

Yes, seabees did. I saw a nice six color DCU with Navy name tapes and seabees embodied logo on ebay long time ago.
