Dont know much about them to be honest but know they are Brit and not French.

RAF Cap Tropical....nice bit of kit. Pre-cursor to the DILAC cap in dpm and based off WWII German caps...

Well, I have to say i've never before seen a Brit cap with so much peak stitching and a tie like on a beret ...... The vents are British and I'm sure you're right Jason - you know your onions for this period !

Would be interesting to see pics of them in use as its quite a bizarrely shaped cap.

Agree Dave - it is a bit of an oddity but iirc 'they who cannot be named' and the paras also used them in the ME. I am certain i have seen photos of them in use with the aforementioned...

Just found this posted on another forum regarding these hats:
"Known as hats A.K. after the hats worn by the German Africa corps in North Africa. On page 126 of Otto von Pivka book on armies of the middle east he has a picture of the gunners of 7 Battery Royal Horse Artillery wearing these hats while serving in the Trucial Oman, also believed worn by Paras in Bahrein.
