What is the purpose of the white, plastic pieces on the sides of the canteen cup?

I am only speculating but I think these guides make it easier to take the canteen cup out of the bottle carrier.

i was told the white plastic parts protect user from burning lips, when used for hot liquids. They would not help significantly to remove from cover.
