Yup, there is quite a variety. However, it's unclear how much of the variety is simple production variations and how much of it is deliberate. Fading can also confuse things.

Personally, I think there are at least 2 or perhaps 3 definite, deliberate color changes.

To be honest, I think I like this pattern better than the Vegetata camouflage. Cool

Does anyone have a set of that really cool-looking yellowish desert camo the Italians were wearing when the War on Terror first started? I believe it has been called "Somali pattern" camo, due to its use there, if I'm not mistaken...

BSM wore an orangish colored spray camo at the beginning of OIF. It was a very short lived pattern and I am fortunate to have one. What I am unfortunate to have missed out on several times is the predecessor. That one is identical to the standard BSM/COMSUBIN spray camo pattern and uniform cut but in desert tans and browns. Very rare, very expensive if found.

Ah... Giles of course has the first BSM desert set that I want, want, want! Oh, wait a minute... need, need, need Wink

Giles, you are also fortunate to have the orange desert uniform. I have this one too. I also have a temperate version in a slightly different cut, ripstop fabric, and a much denser camouflage pattern. I think the Marine in your second picture, opposite from the sniper in desert colors, is wearing this uniform.

Vonstuck, the first desert set you have should have been produced in a small number of pieces for San Marco Battalion (not COMSUBIN) during the war in Somalia, in 1994/1995.
It's an interesting camo, I would like to have one as well.
The other one isn't commercial, it has been issued by COMSUBIN before the last actual one (I'm not sure, but I heard in the past for the first Gulf war), that actually it isn't the one in the real photo; in fact this italian military doesn't wear this set, but another one, the so called "pink" version.
Anyway, the vertical zip + 2 chest pocket + short collar are the "typical" characteristics of COMSUBIN camouflage made by an important fabric located in Tuscania.
They made also other sets, many prototypes etc...
Here pictures of the pink version:

Another experimental BSM/COMSUBIN uniform. This one of mine is undated, but the following picture is from 2006 and is consistent with other trial uniforms. The fabric appears to be the same as used in the previous uniforms, not different like the type seen in my other post above.

I have also a nice prototype made for San Marco.
It's probably from the early '90s. Fabric is the same of the issued one. It has also inner jacket for winter.

NICE!! That is only the second set of that I have ever seen. I lost out on the bidding of the first one because it was a time when I didn't have much money and, obviously, many people wanted it.

As a camouflage, I think it was correct to reject that pattern. Too much black.
